What is a domain name?

A domain name is your address on the internet.

There are unlimited opportunities to become entrepreneurs, and gain profit from the endeavour of becoming part of the online world. Not to mention being able to work from the comfort of your home. One pertinent question which needs to be addressed when starting your online presence is: What is a domain name? Every business needs a domain name to be able to establish a website. A domain name is simply a unique address for a website that allows it to be identified on the internet. If a friend is interested in visiting your website, all one does is to type a domain name into the browser and one will be directed to the website.

What is a domain name? Domain names correspond to numeric IP (Internet Protocol) addresses which consist of four numbers between the numerical 0 and 255, separated by periods. The internet searches for a domain name by tracking down its numeric IP address. The domain names and their equivalent IP address have to be unique. The Domain Name System is a collection of databases that list the domain names and their IP addresses. It is the task of the domain name servers to change the domain names into the IP addresses so the internet users do not have to bother with remembering a series of numbers. Imagine trying to remember: 74.53.27.130. That's the IP address of this site!

Different domains can represent a variety of aspects for your business website. The domain name you choose must convey the nature of your website so people will not be misled, and those interested can easily find your website. It is not possible for two organizations to have the same domain name. Each domain name is unique, and this is what makes every single one special. What is a domain name and what is a URL? Are questions that could have brought you here. URL is often confused with a domain name but they are both entirely different. URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is the entire web address of a web site and it includes colons and slashes.

What is a domain name? A domain is divided into two parts. Let's use the URL http://www.iDomainPortfolio.com as an example. The first part, "PremiumDomainNames" would be the keywords. The second part of the domain name, .org is called the extension. The most important extensions are .com, .net, and .org. Domain names have marketing value as potential customers associate a particular product or service with them.

What is a domain name? There are two type of domain names; top level and second level domain names. Top level domain names are identified by their one suffix extension. Examples are .com, .net, .org, .co, .info, .biz and so forth. Second level domain names contain two suffixes, one following the other. Examples are .com.uk, which is a second level domain name due to an additional suffix attached to the first one. The additional suffix 'uk' shows that the website originates in United Kingdom.
